About Safa Urja
What does Safa Urja do?
Safa Urja Utpadan Pvt. Ltd. turns waste into resources. We collect and manage municipal waste and sort it at our Material Recovery Facility. We also make Safa Mal organic fertiliser from market and green waste, make interlocking eco-blocks from hard-to-recycle glass and plastic, and recycle plastic into HDPE wiring pipes.
Where do you work?
Our facility is in Khairahani, Chitwan, and we work with Ratnanagar and Khairahani municipalities. We have also completed a project with Bharatpur Metropolitan City at its wholesale vegetable and fruit market. Our model can be used anywhere in Nepal, and we are always glad to talk with new municipalities and partners.
Can our municipality work with Safa Urja?
Yes. We work with local governments in public-private partnership, from door-to-door collection to sorting, composting and recycling. Please contact us and we will be happy to visit, understand your needs and suggest a plan that fits your municipality.
Waste and sorting
Why should I separate waste at home?
When waste is mixed, most of it ends up in a dump. When it is separated at home, organic waste can be handled properly instead of rotting in a dump, and plastic, paper, glass and metal can be recycled. It keeps streets, rivers and animals safe from plastic, and it makes collection cleaner and cheaper for everyone.
How should I separate it?
Keep three containers: one for organic waste (vegetable and fruit peel, food scraps, leaves), one for plastic and paper, and one for glass and metal. Keep batteries, medicines and other hazardous items apart and hand them over separately.
What happens to the waste after it is collected?
It comes to our facility, where it is sorted. Organic waste is kept apart and treated properly, so it does not rot in a dump. Recyclables are cleaned and sent for recycling, and some plastic becomes HDPE pipe. Glass and multilayer plastic that are hard to recycle go into eco-blocks. You can see each step at our facility.
Safa Mal organic fertiliser
What is jaibik mal (organic fertilizer), and why use it in Nepal?
Jaibik mal (जैविक मल) is organic fertilizer made from natural, plant-based material through composting. It feeds the soil with organic matter, helps it hold water and air, and releases nutrients slowly. Many Nepali soils are low in organic matter after years of chemical fertilizer, so jaibik mal helps keep farmland fertile. Safa Mal is jaibik mal made in Nepal by Safa Urja.
How do I choose the best, quality organic mal (ramro, gunastariya mal) in Nepal?
Look for organic mal that is: made from clean, separated plant material; fully composted (dark, crumbly, with an earthy smell, not hot and not smelly); free of plastic, glass and stones; and packed with clear details such as the maker, production date and batch. Good-quality (gunastariya) organic mal improves the soil season after season, not just one crop. Safa Mal is made in Nepal from vegetable, fruit and green waste by aerobic composting, and each pack carries its production details.
Is there cheap (sasto) organic mal in Nepal? How much does Safa Mal cost?
When comparing prices, look at quality as well as the price per kg: compost that is not fully matured can carry weed seeds and harm young plants, so a cheap bag can cost more in the field. Safa Mal comes in 2 kg packs and 25 kg bags, and farmer groups, co-operatives and dealers can ask for bulk prices. For the current price list, write to sales@safaurja.com or contact us.
What is Safa Mal made from?
Safa Mal is made from separated organic waste, such as vegetable and fruit waste from markets, together with green and agricultural waste like crop residues and leaves. It is made by aerobic composting at our bio-management area and sold in packs under the ObiFert Plant Food brand, produced in association with Safa Urja.
Can I use Safa Mal for karesabari (kitchen garden), kausi kheti (rooftop farming) and pots?
Yes. Safa Mal is well suited to karesabari (करेसाबारी, kitchen gardens), kausi kheti (कौसी खेती, rooftop farming), gamla (pots) and raised beds, as well as vegetable fields (tarkari kheti), fruit trees and flower gardens. Mix it into the soil before planting and add a little around the plants during the season, following the amounts on the pack. The 2 kg pack is handy for rooftops and pots; the 25 kg bag suits larger gardens and fields.
Which plants is it good for?
It is suitable for all kinds of plants: vegetables, fruit, flowers, grass and kitchen gardens.
How does it help the soil?
Safa Mal releases nutrients slowly, improves soil aeration and increases soil organic carbon, without extra chemical inputs. Feeding the soil, not just the crop, keeps land fertile for the long term.
What pack sizes are available?
Safa Mal comes in 2 kg packs, handy for kitchen gardens and pots, and 25 kg bags for farms. Larger quantities for farmer groups and co-operatives are available on request.
How much should I use?
It depends on the crop and the soil. Please follow the instructions on the pack, or ask us and we will be glad to advise.
Where can I buy Safa Mal?
Write to sales@safaurja.com or contact us. Shops, dealers, farmer groups and co-operatives who want to stock or distribute Safa Mal are welcome too.
Eco-blocks and recycled pipes
What are your eco-blocks made of?
Our interlocking blocks and hexagonal paver blocks are made from crushed recovered glass, a small share of multilayer plastic, sand dust and cement. They give materials that are hard to recycle a long, useful second life instead of sending them to a landfill or a river.
Can I buy eco-blocks?
Not at present. Our eco-blocks show what hard-to-recycle glass and multilayer plastic can become, but today they cannot be produced at a price that competes with conventional blocks. With supportive policy, such as government incentives or green public procurement of recycled building materials, they could become a viable product. We would welcome working with governments and partners on pilots: please contact us.
What are your HDPE pipes for, and how is quality checked?
Our Saura Plast HDPE pipes are for electrical wiring (see the product), made from recovered plastic that is washed clean and dried first. Pipes are bent, flexed and struck with a hammer to check that they do not crack, and shopkeepers who stock them test them the same way.
Visits and contact
Can we visit your facility?
Yes, by request. Our facility is a working site in daily operation, so visits are arranged in advance, in coordination with, and with the approval of, our partner municipalities in eastern Chitwan. Municipalities, schools, farmer groups and partners are warmly welcome: please send us a request.
Can you run an awareness programme at our school or community?
We are happy to. We have run waste awareness programmes, clean-up campaigns and farmer trainings with schools, wards and community groups. You can see them in our events gallery, and contact us to plan one.
