On Friday, 26 August 2022 (2079 Bhadra 10 BS), Safa Urja handed over waste sorting stations, made and paid for by us, to the fruit and vegetable association, Chhetrapur, Chitwan, for the wholesale fruit and vegetable market (Sabji Mandi) in Narayangarh, Bharatpur Metropolitan City. The Safa Urja team and the Sabji Mandi authorities were present at the handover.
Three bins under one roof
Each station has a shade roof and three woven baskets with clear labels, so traders and shoppers can separate their waste on the spot:
- Green: vegetable and fruit waste (organic)
- Yellow: plastic and paper
- Black: glass and metal
Waste that is separated at the source is far easier to recycle, and the organic waste from the market can go on to become compost instead of rotting in a dump.
A message on the roof
On top of every station sits a wire sculpture of an animal, such as a fish or a cow, filled with discarded plastic bottles and wrappers. The frames were shaped by hand from wire, one by one, in the workshop. It is a simple reminder that cows, fish and other animals around our markets and rivers suffer from plastic pollution and often eat plastic by mistake. Every bottle or wrapper put in the right bin is one that does not end up inside an animal.
Thank you to the fruit and vegetable association and the Sabji Mandi authorities for working with us to keep the market clean.
